According to Cloudflare, a Mirai botnet strain launched a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) campaign that peaked at 2.5 terabytes per second (Tbps), making it the greatest attack it has ever encountered.
UDP and TCP floods were used in the attack, which targeted Wynncraft, a Minecraft server. The internet security company said that by containing the attack, no disruption to the game was caused. While Microsoft last year recorded two attacks that hit 3.25 Tbps and 3.47 Tbps, this attack may have been a record-breaker for Cloudflare.
BitTorrent has been singled out by the corporation as an attack vector that has significantly increased. BitTorrent-based DDoS attacks have surged by more than 1,200% QoQ.
As a pro-Russian hacker group called Killnet has attacked important corporations and numerous nations, including the United States, Estonia, and Lithuania, DDoS attacks have gained media attention recently.
This year, Cloudflare also saw an attack with 26 million requests per second (RPS). The attack was notable in part because it was supported by a tiny botnet of only 5,000 machines. However, Google had the largest attack to date in terms of RPS, with a high of 46 million RPS.
