Malicious hackers can deploy all kinds of attacks, sometimes with financial or political motivations, although at other times they only try to send a message. Such is a recently reported case in Miami, where an unidentified individual managed to gain access to systems controlling a traffic signal to leave a controversial message about the coronavirus.
The hacker accessed the electronic sign to modify traffic information and spread messages such as “COVID-19 was a hoax,” “Vaccines kill, or “Arrest Fauci,” in reference to Dr. Anthony Fauci.
Officials at the Miami-Dade Highway Authority are already aware of the incident, so the e-sign systems were restored and the hacker’s message was removed. As some users will know, Fauci is the nation’s top infectious disease expert, current director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and chief medical adviser to President Joe Biden.
At the moment any details about the identity of the hacker or the technique he used to gain unauthorized access to the systems that control these electronic signs are unknown.
