Collaboration between law enforcement agencies around the world has helped contain multiple online criminal practices. Experts from an ethical hacking course mention that, thanks to a report sent by the General Secretariat of Interpol, the Brazilian authorities managed to arrest an alleged 50-year-old pedophile, active for a considerable time.
Operation Unveiled, deployed by the Children’s Exploitation Unit of the Brazilian Federal Police, ended with the arrest of the individual, who used to publish images and videos of his crimes on multiple sites on the dark web.
The report was reportedly prepared by Australian researchers in 2017, whose work was supplemented by reports from the Danish authorities and Interpol, experts from an ethical hacking course mention.
Some of the material posted by the suspect shows the abuse of two girls in their 3rd and 10s. Multiple samples of this explicit material began circulating on dark websites within reach of hundreds of thousands of users. Brazilian authorities believe that one of the sites where the material was posted is the world’s largest Portuguese-speaking child abuse forum.
In addition to the girls featured in these photos and videos, the pedophile claimed to have abused many more children over the years. Eventually, a special unit of Brazilian police managed to trace the suspect’s location; in addition to the arrest, the authorities confiscated multiple technological devices where the criminal stored more samples of explicit content.
With regard to the victims in the original material, the authorities have already identified and brought them to safety, as was the case with André Mendonca, Minister of Justice and Public Security of Brazil.
Specialists from an ethical hacking course mention that dark web remains a very useful platform for drug sellers and other illegal products, paedophiles and fans of illegal pornography thanks to its anonymous environment character, so tracking these cybercriminals is a complex challenge for the authorities. In this regard, the Secretary-General of Interpol Jurgen Stock mentions: “These investigations may take years, although we must not give up. Ensuring that children are not victims of these criminals is one of our top priorities.”
The picture is unrelenting, as a recent Interpol report indicates that since social estating measures began to be taken due to the pandemic, activity in illegal forums where child pornography is shared, so much remains to be done.
